Tulum luxury tourism is a slightly different brand to most. Tulum’s boutique hotels are themselves a world away from mammoth 5* resorts in other parts of the Riviera Maya and further afield. However, it is Tulum’s approach to luxury that makes it truly unique. Rustic, Caribbean chic is the backdrop and self-improvement takes centre stage. Uncountable yoga classes, cooking classes, spas and holistic retreats are the norm here, with everyone who visits hoping to leave as a better version of themselves. And it seems that Tulum may be about to take the next step in luxury self-improvement. A project is currently raising funds in the hopes of opening Tulum’s first ‘happiness hotel.’
Tulum Luxury Tourism: Awakening Hotel
Husband and wife team Martin Loeffler and Adriana Chardi are heading an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for their happiness hotel: Awakening, Tulum. Marketing themselves as an ‘uncommon luxury hotel experience,’ they encourage each and every guest to ‘go deeper, live an experience that is designed to AWAKEN!’
The location for the hotel will be Laguna Nopalitos. The laguna is technically a cenote. Though its sandy shores and fresh turquoise waters feel as beachy as any part of the Riviera Maya coast. Just 19 km south of Tulum, on the border of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve, the area is surrounded by dense mangrove and lush jungle.
Awakening plans to keep it that way. Every aspect of the Awakening hotel has been designed to ‘connect and evolve’. The architecture of Awakening mimics natural formations and geometry which aim to create the most relaxing spaces possible. Hotel rooms are in fact ‘cocoons’ designed to create a feeling of safety, surrounded by the preserved nature of the Riviera Maya.
Martin and Adriana are serious about the social and environmental impact of the luxury hotel.
“Mother Nature is the main protagonist in our experience so a design integrated with and adapted to nature is a key component of our concept. We are implementing high standards of sustainability in our arquitectural design, construction, and operation in order to minimize environmental impact. We are striving to be a leader in the area of sustainable hotel operation in the Riviera Maya. Use of clean energy, waste reduction strategies, and high-end water treatment will allow us to minimize environmental impact. Low impact building materials are just one element of our sustainability strategy.”
“Spreading happiness is our contribution.Guests: Happiness and consciousness are contagious. So a happier and more conscious person will spread that happiness to their families, friends, colleagues, employees, followers and leaders, thus creating better relationships and happier lives around them.Employees & stakeholders: Our organization, including ourselves, need to live the change we would like to create for our guests. Therefore, we have designed HR and stakeholder management policies that are aligned with and support our mission. Our Community: Many Mayan communities around us here on the Yucatan peninsul are struggling with low income and no access to personal development resources. We will create a “Happiness Fund” to provide personal development initiatives for these communities. In fact, each Awakening hotel night sold will pay for one personal development experience for one person, thus allowing us to reach up to 500 people or more every month.”
