Cancun to Receive a Record Number of Visitors

Cancun Municipal Tourism Director, Francisco López Reyes, anticipated that at the end of this year the Cancun International Airport will close with a historic figure of 23 million passengers. Furthermore, at least four new air routes are in port. This further proves the clear the profitability that the city continues to have as a tourist destination.

The new routes already confirmed are Fort Lauderdale-Cancun, Nashville, Tennessee-Cancun and St. Louis-Cancun, operated by Southwest Airlines. On top of these, new flights from Baltimore and Chicago operated by Spirit Airlines beginning this month in progress.

In addition, VivaAerobus will implement the Querétaro-Cancún flight, which will further increase connections with major cities in the interior of the country, the official said.

He added that Cancun will also indirectly benefit from the three new flights from Asia to Mexico City through ANA and China Airlines. This is due to a significant percentage of Asian tourism that travels from Mexico City to visit the Mexican Caribbean.

“There are more than 60,000 Asians arriving every year, and I believe that with these flights there could be an increase of even 50% in the country, and for Cancún the increase could be 20%,” he said.

He recalled that the airport of the city grows at a rate of 10% per passenger per year. So this year the figure could surpass the 23 million users mobilized to and from the Mexican Caribbean.

Last weekend landed the first of four flights announced by the municipal director of Tourism. The US airline Southwest inaugurated the new route with a daily direct flight between the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Cancun.

“This new flight is great news for the destination because it will increase the influx of North American tourism to the many natural and tourist attractions offered by Cancun and the destinations that make up the Treasures of the Caribbean,” said Lizzie Cole Guerrero, Director General of the Office Of Cancun Visitors and Conventions, adding that with the start of operations of this flight there are 13 Southwest flights daily to the city, which will increase with two new routes that are scheduled to start operations in November.

The flight will be operated by a Boeing 737-700. The first of which arrived in Cancún with national and international press on board, as well as airline executives.

Southwest is the largest air carrier in the United States in terms of domestic passengers. Cancun International Airport has more than 100 million customers a year. It operates a network of 101 destinations in the United States and eight in other countries. This equates to more than 3,900 departures per day during the high season. The company employs more than 54,000 people and has the largest number of Boeing 737-700 aircraft in the world.
