This coming Tuesday October 10th will see President Enrique Peña Nieto along with President and CEO of Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste Fernando Chico Pardo and Governor Carlos Manuel Joaquín González inaugurate the new Terminal 4 of Cancun International Airport.
The Cancun International Airport is Mexico’s second busiest airport after Mexico City and is the largest for international travellers. In 2016, the airport welcomed 21,415,795 passengers and this figure is set to increase. 2017 so far has seen an 11.2% increase in passengers, as 17,996,106 passengers have travelled through the airport in the first 9 months of the year.
Terminal 4 (T4) has been 2 years in the making with an investment of 2.5 billion pesos. The mammoth project is the next step in increasing passenger numbers to Cancun International Airport as the terminal can serve a further 9 million passengers annually. In total, this will bring Cancun International Airport’s capacity to 25 million passengers yearly.
General Director of Cancun International Airport, Carlos Trueba Coll, looked to the future of the airport, “By 2020 the capacity would increase to 32 million, when the T4 operates to full capacity, which will be 48% more, and would strengthen the operation and the arrival of more visitors to the destination.”Once Terminal 4 begins operations, the airport will become one of the most important travel hubs in Latin America. Currently, Cancun offers 21 national destinations and 30 international countries covering the Americas and Europe. However, new destinations are being added and the opening of Terminal 4 will see a further 75 operations completed each hour.
The increase in passenger arrivals only spells good news for tourism and real estate Riviera Maya. New routes are making the Riviera Maya more accessible. And with exciting tourism projects, such as a Mexican theme park, on the horizon the Riviera Maya will be more tempting than ever as a travel and investment destination.
